Create an indoor winter wonderland using white coffee filters cut into snowflakes for children to dance and move with. Fold the coffee filter in half and then in half again and cut out small triangles. Open and let your snowflakes whirl, twirl and dance around to the music. I shared this song with early childhood educators at the National NAEYC Conference in Dallas last month to use with the coffee filter snowflakes. Sung to the tune “Where is Thumbkin” the lyrics are “Snow is falling, snow is falling, all around, all around. Soft and quiet snowflakes, soft and quiet snowflakes, not a sound, not a sound”. Begin this activity by asking children to sit very still and listen to their snowflakes as they float, whirl and dance to the ground”. What do they hear? Then ask the if they can be as quiet as the snowflakes as they move and dance to the music. You can also download my song “First Snowfall” from my Nature Notes CD or “Dancing Snowflakes” from my Creative Notes CD on itunes for the children to sing, dance and move through their indoor winter wonderland. Enjoy Ms. Maureen
